Library and Information services / Borrowing
Our library is open to all. Equipment and printed and electronic media are freely available for use on the premises, but you will have to register for a library card if you wish to borrow materials.
Library card
You can register for a library card at the library. You will need to present photographic ID showing your social security number. Acceptable forms of identification are:
a Finnish ID card issued by the police
a Finnish driving license
a passport
Under-15s must have their application signed by a parent or guardian.
Your first library card is free of charge.
Library cards are non-transferable. You are responsible for any material borrowed using your card. In order to prevent fraud, you should notify us immediately if you lose your card.
Also notify the library as soon as possible of any changes in your name, postal address or e-mail address.
Borrowing, returning and renewing
Our loan periods are 28 days for books and 14 days for magazines, films and CD-ROMs.
You may borrow a maximum of 3 DVDs or CD-ROMs at any one time. There are no limits on other items.
If no reservations have been made, loans can be renewed by contacting the library. We are aiming to enable renewals through the VEERA system during 2009.
Books can be renewed a maximum of five times. Magazines, films and CD-ROMs can only be renewed once.
Loss of borrowing privileges
You will lose your borrowing privileges if you still have not returned borrowed materials 28 days after the end of the loan period, or if you have unpaid service charges exceeding a certain amount (see the current price list for details). Losing or defacing library materials will also lead to a loss of borrowing privileges.
You will regain your borrowing privileges once you have returned the overdue materials, paid any outstanding charges, or compensated the library for any lost or damaged materials.
Reservations
Currently, reservations can only be made by contacting the library. We are aiming to enable reservations through the VEERA database during 2009.
Interlibrary loan
If the library does not own a particular title, interlibrary loan can be ordered from libraries outside the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and even from abroad. Please see our price list for the charges applying to interlibrary loan. Materials borrowed from abroad can only be consulted in our reading rooms.
